PagerDuty vs Opsgenie

This is no longer a straight comparison: Atlassian is retiring Opsgenie. If you're weighing the two, the real question isn't "which is better" — it's "where do I move before Opsgenie's lights go out." Here are the dates, and the honest options.

The short version

Opsgenie is being wound down. New sales stopped on June 4, 2025, Jira Service Management-bundled access ended in October 2025, and full end of support lands on April 5, 2027. Atlassian's official path is Jira Service Management (JSM) + Compass, but many teams don't want incident response split across two products — so the practical choice is a dedicated tool. PagerDuty is the safe enterprise landing spot; incident.io and Rootly are the popular modern ones.

Where Opsgenie teams are actually going

  • Atlassian's own path: Jira Service Management + Compass (with the new AI "Incident Command Center"). Best if you're all-in on Atlassian; disliked for splitting response across two tools.
  • PagerDuty: the safe enterprise choice — deepest automation and integrations, at a per-user + add-on cost.
  • incident.io / Rootly: the modern, Slack-native landing spots most migrating teams choose.
  • Budget picks: Squadcast, ilert and Better Stack for smaller teams.

Migration effort

Plan it now — don't wait for 2027. Most challengers ship an Opsgenie importer for schedules, escalation policies and integrations, but you must re-verify escalation chains and re-point every monitoring webhook. Run the new tool in parallel for at least one on-call rotation. Wire deploys into it so a bad release pages the right person automatically — e.g. a Buddy pipeline webhook against the tool's Events API.
